Abstract

One of the ways to develop intercultural competence in Arabic pedagogy in Indonesia is by internalizing every element of the target culture (Arabic), source culture (Indonesian), and international culture (non-Arabic and Indonesian culture) in Arabic textbooks. The Indonesian government through the ministry of religion in 2020 has published Arabic textbooks at the Madrasah Aliyah (MA) level which are allegedly based on intercultural communication competence. This paper seeks to examine cultural elements originating from the target culture, source culture, and international culture contained in Arabic textbooks for the Madrasah Aliyah (MA) level published by the ministry of religion in 2020. This study is a literature style and optimizes the content analysis framework to identify key points discussed. This study formulates that the cultural elements in the Arabic textbooks at the Madrasah Aliyah (MA) level published by the ministry of religion in 2020 are dominated by religion, especially Islam. The next element relates to social organizations that predominantly present target and source cultures such as the names of people who are synonymous with Arab society. This book also finds cultural elements in the form of government, which mostly presents the names of cities related to cultural information sources. In addition, cultural elements were presented in the form of language, art and literature, economic systems, and customs and traditions. The dominant cultural sources are the target culture, then the source culture, and the least international culture
