Abstract

This study aims to analyze the principal’s management in developing students’ disciplinary and religious character SMP Negeri at Provinsi Riau. The research employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Participants included the principal, teachers, and students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis, and analyzed using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing techniques. The findings reveal that the principal implemented four core management functions—planning, organizing, actuating, and controlling—to support character development programs. Disciplinary character was fostered through school regulations, routine ceremonies, and punctuality habits, while religious character was strengthened through congregational prayers, collective prayers before lessons, and religious activities. However, implementation remains inconsistent, and evaluation mechanisms are not yet supported by measurable character indicators. Supporting factors include leadership commitment and established school culture, whereas external environment and limited parental involvement become obstacles. The study recommends strengthening data-based evaluation systems, enhancing internal coordination, and fostering school–family partnerships to ensure sustainable character development.
