Abstract

The annual English debate competition for National High Schools in Indonesia is more than just an academic contest; it serves as a platform for instilling positive values and fostering national unity. This study explores the objectives and structure of this competition as outlined in the guidebook published by the Directorate of High School Education. The competition aims to introduce and disseminate positive values inherent in debating, such as appreciating differences, analytical thinking, effective presentation, teamwork, and critical examination of various issues. Additionally, it provides a medium for students to express their opinions and engage in constructive discourse. Another key objective is to integrate these values into the Indonesian education system and promote inter-provincial relationships. The competition's structure involves a tiered selection process, beginning at the school level, progressing through district/city and provincial levels, and culminating in a national event. This process not only ensures the representation of the best debaters from each province but also strengthens connections between different regions of Indonesia. The study highlights the competition's role in enhancing students' skills and contributing to the broader educational and societal goals of Indonesia.
