Abstract

Code-switching is used by someone when interacting because it has a different function for every meaning of the spoken sentence. This study was to find the function of using code-switching in Critical Eleven Novel by Ika Natasha. The data is taken from the utterance of the novel that has code-switching. The method of study used qualitative descriptive. The findings result show that the function of code-switching used in the Critical Eleven novel is six functions. The first is the referential function where the speakers switch language either because they are not able to find the right word or the word does not exist. The second is the directive and integrative function that used to create a cooperative between the speaker. The third is the expressive function that is by making one’s feelings known one can present oneself to others as a unique individual. The fourth is the phatic function that is observed when the speaker tries to keep communication channels open. The fifth is the metalinguistic function that refers to the case when the speaker makes explicit references to one of the languages involved. The sixth is the poetic function where speakers change the language.
